How do I identify spring capacity?
Spring capacity is typically stamped on the spring eye or main leaf. It can also be calculated by measuring the number of leaves, thickness, and width. A 5-leaf spring at 2" wide typically has a 1,750-2,000 lbs capacity.
What is the difference between single eye and double eye springs?
Single eye springs have an eye at the front end and a slipper pad at the rear, allowing expansion and contraction. Double eye springs have eyes at both ends and are used with shackles, providing more movement flexibility.
Why is spring arch height important?
Arch height determines trailer ride height and load capacity. Higher arch provides more load capacity but may result in a harsher ride when empty. Measure from center of U-bolt to center of spring eye.
When should I add helper springs?
Add helper springs when regularly hauling loads near maximum capacity, experiencing excessive sag, or needing to level an unevenly loaded trailer. Helper springs only engage under heavy load, maintaining ride quality when empty.
Should I replace spring bushings?
Yes, always replace spring bushings when installing new springs. Worn bushings cause squeaking, poor handling, and uneven tire wear. Polyurethane bushings last longer than rubber but transmit more road vibration.
What is the difference between equalizer and slipper springs?
Equalizer springs are used in tandem axle setups, connecting two axles to distribute load evenly. Slipper springs have a flat pad at one end instead of an eye, allowing the spring to expand and contract without shackles.
